UDC Event 2026

The operation took place on 31 July 2026 at Rumah Janang, located in the Tanjung Latap area, following an urgent request for assistance from the homeowner.

The Malaysian Civil Defence Force (APM) Sibu District team was alerted to the presence of the reptile inside the house.

Upon receiving the emergency call, the rescue squad mobilised immediately to the location. Speed and caution were paramount, as snakes found within domestic spaces can pose significant risks to residents, particularly in areas where they may be hidden or cornered.

When the APM personnel arrived at Rumah Janang, they conducted a thorough search of the premises based on the information provided by the caller. The team located the snake in the kitchen area, a common entry point for wildlife seeking food or shelter.

The reptile was identified as a ringed snake, measuring approximately three feet in length. While not all ringed snakes are highly venomous, their presence in a living space requires professional handling to ensure safety.

Using specialised equipment, including long-handled tweezers designed for safe reptile capture, the officers managed to secure the snake without incident. The tool allowed the rescuers to maintain a safe distance while controlling the animal’s movements.

The operation was completed smoothly, with no injuries reported to either the homeowners or the rescue team members. The snake was subsequently released into a suitable natural habitat away from human settlement.

This incident serves as a timely reminder for residents in rural and semi-rural areas of Sarawak to remain vigilant. Houses built near forested areas or waterways, such as those in Tanjung Latap, are more susceptible to wildlife intrusions.

Simple preventive measures, such as sealing gaps in walls, keeping kitchens clean of food scraps, and maintaining clear surroundings, can help deter snakes from entering homes.

The APM Sibu has urged the public to exercise caution if they encounter any dangerous animals. Attempting to catch or kill a snake without proper training and equipment can lead to serious bites or injuries.

Instead, residents are advised to keep a safe distance, isolate the area if possible, and contact professional emergency services immediately.

For emergencies involving wildlife or other crises in the Sibu district, the public can reach the APM Sibu PKOD emergency line at 084-220044.

Alternatively, the universal emergency number 999 remains available for all urgent situations. Quick reporting ensures that trained personnel can respond effectively, minimising risk to the community.

Local community leaders have praised the efficiency of the APM team in handling such incidents. Their readiness to respond to non-fire emergencies, including medical aids and animal rescues, makes them an invaluable resource for the district.

The successful removal of the snake from Rumah Janang demonstrates their competence and commitment to public safety.

As the monsoon season approaches, wildlife activity often increases due to changes in weather patterns and habitat conditions.

Residents are encouraged to inspect their homes regularly for potential entry points and to educate family members, especially children, on what to do if they spot a snake. Awareness and preparedness are key to coexisting safely with the natural environment.

The APM continues to conduct community outreach programmes to educate residents on emergency preparedness.

These initiatives aim to empower individuals with the knowledge needed to handle minor crises while knowing when to seek professional help. The recent snake rescue in Tanjung Latap highlights the practical application of these safety principles.

With the snake safely removed and the household secured, the residents of Rumah Janang can resume their daily activities with peace of mind

The APM Sibu remains on standby, ready to assist the community with any future emergencies, reinforcing their role as guardians of public safety in the region.
