PUTRAJAYA – Malaysia and the Republic of Korea have discussed ways to deepen cooperation in maritime security, defence technology and operational capabilities during a meeting between senior maritime officials in Putrajaya.
Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (Maritime Malaysia) Director-General Admiral Maritime Datuk Haji Mohd Rosli bin Abdullah received a courtesy visit from the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Korea to Malaysia, His Excellency Yeo Seung-bae, at the Malaysian Maritime Headquarters on 14 August.
The meeting focused on areas of mutual interest and possible cooperation between the two countries, with maritime security among the key issues discussed.
According to Maritime Malaysia, the talks included opportunities to strengthen bilateral ties through the sharing of defence technology expertise and efforts to improve operational capabilities in the maritime domain.
The discussions come as maritime agencies face increasingly complex security challenges, requiring closer cooperation, information sharing and stronger operational preparedness between countries.
Malaysia and South Korea have also identified potential areas for closer engagement in training and capability development. Joint training opportunities could provide a platform for personnel to exchange operational knowledge and experience.
Maritime Malaysia said cooperation with South Korea was particularly important in supporting efforts to maintain maritime border security while examining ways to enhance the agency’s strategic capabilities.
The meeting also touched on the potential role of technology and defence-related expertise in strengthening maritime enforcement operations. Access to modern capabilities can support agencies in responding to changing security requirements across their respective waters.
Maritime security has become an increasingly important aspect of international cooperation as countries seek to protect maritime interests and maintain stability in their surrounding waters.
For Malaysia, maintaining secure waters is closely linked to national sovereignty, enforcement responsibilities and the protection of maritime interests. Strengthening links with international partners provides opportunities to develop expertise and improve coordination in responding to shared challenges.
The Republic of Korea has maintained engagement with Malaysia across various areas of bilateral relations, while the latest meeting provided an opportunity to explore more focused cooperation involving maritime agencies.
Also attending the meeting alongside the Maritime Malaysia Director-General were Director of the Maritime Enforcement and Coordination Division First Admiral Vincent Rajamony and Director of the Strategic and International Planning Division Maritime Captain Mohammad Nasir Man.
The discussions reflect Maritime Malaysia’s broader effort to expand its international network and develop partnerships with maritime counterparts and other strategic institutions.
The agency said it remains committed to strengthening international cooperation to support Malaysia’s maritime sovereignty, security and national interests at regional and international levels.
Further cooperation with South Korea could include training, technology exchange and capacity-building initiatives, although specific joint programmes or implementation timelines were not announced following the meeting.
The courtesy visit therefore provided a platform for both sides to discuss potential areas of practical cooperation while reinforcing the importance of maintaining maritime security in the face of evolving regional and global challenges.
