SRI AMAN – Firefighters removed a wasp nest from the upper section of a building at Sri Aman II Hospital after being called to the premises on Thursday evening.
The operation was carried out on 13 August following a report received by the Sri Aman Fire and Rescue Station at 7.37pm. The hospital is located about 6 kilometres from the station.
The nest was found on the upper part of the building at a height of approximately 9 metres, requiring firefighters to use specialised access equipment to reach it safely.
One emergency response vehicle and a team led by PBK II (TBK I) Abdul Kadir anak Sebie were deployed to the scene.
A contractor also assisted the operation, providing two personnel and a skylift that enabled the firefighters to reach the elevated location.
After assessing the situation at the scene, the operation commander donned full personal protective equipment before beginning the removal work.
The skylift was used to raise the firefighter to the level of the nest. Two insecticide sprayers containing Baygon were then used to treat and destroy the wasp nest.
The operation continued until the nest had been fully dealt with. Firefighters subsequently checked the surrounding area and found no other immediate danger.
Once the situation was assessed to be safe, the team concluded the operation and returned to the station.
No problems were reported during the operation.
The incident highlights the role of fire and rescue personnel in responding to situations involving potentially dangerous insects, particularly when nests are located in elevated or difficult-to-access parts of buildings.
The use of a skylift provided by the contractor allowed firefighters to reach the nest while maintaining a safer working position. The operation was completed without any reported complications.
Fire and rescue teams are also routinely called to deal with incidents that fall outside conventional firefighting duties, including removing hazardous insect nests when they pose a potential risk to people in occupied buildings.
In this case, the response at Sri Aman II Hospital focused on removing the wasp nest and ensuring there were no further immediate hazards at the location before the team stood down.
