MIRI – The recurring flooding problem in the Amfield Villa 2 residential area, Jalan Pujut Padang Kerbau, has drawn continued attention from authorities, with a site visit conducted to assess causes and explore possible solutions.
Sarawak Transport Minister and Senadin State Assemblyman Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin said the neighbourhood has been identified as a low-lying area prone to flooding, particularly during heavy rainfall when water flows down from nearby hilly terrain.
He noted that floodwaters in the area have previously reached levels of about one foot, disrupting the comfort and safety of residents.
“This site visit aims to assess the actual situation on the ground and collect initial information to enable follow-up actions to be planned comprehensively and integratedly,” he explained during the inspection.
The visit was attended by representatives from the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID), Miri City Council (MBM), Land and Survey Department, and the Public Works Department (JKR), who examined both technical and administrative aspects of the issue.
Dato Sri Lee also highlighted that some land adjacent to the affected area is privately owned, which restricts the immediate implementation of drainage works without prior consent from the landowner.
Negotiations with the landowner will therefore be necessary before any mitigation measures can proceed.
He added that the DID has been tasked with conducting further studies and preparing technical proposals to address the flooding problem.
These findings will later be discussed with the landowner and relevant agencies to ensure a coordinated approach.
The initiative reflects the government’s commitment to tackling localised flooding issues in Miri, with emphasis on balancing technical solutions, land ownership rights, and community safety.
