Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim described his meeting with the Malaysian diaspora in Johannesburg as a deeply meaningful occasion, underscoring the strong bond between Malaysians abroad and their homeland.
The gathering, held during his official programme in South Africa, brought together members of the community who shared their experiences, challenges, and opportunities while living thousands of miles away from Malaysia.
Anwar noted that the warmth and closeness of the diaspora made the event feel as though it were taking place in Kuala Lumpur. He praised their resilience and unity, which have shaped the strength of the Malaysian community in South Africa and the wider region.
In his address, the Prime Minister highlighted the MADANI Government’s commitment to strengthening ties with Malaysians abroad. He assured the diaspora that they remain connected to the homeland, valued, and recognised as part of the nation’s pulse and spirit of development.
“They are the country’s unofficial ambassadors who have a conscience to create the country’s reputation and image, expand networks and propel the country forward,” Anwar remarked.
The Prime Minister also shared Malaysia’s broader goals from his official visits to Ethiopia, South Africa, and Kenya. He explained that these visits were not solely focused on economics and investment but also on positioning Malaysia at the forefront of values and principles of humanity.
He emphasised the importance of examining Africa’s long history of suffering and working towards building a future based on multilateralism and justice.
Anwar expressed admiration for the diaspora’s deep love for Malaysia, which he witnessed at the end of the ceremony. He described their passion as a driving force that strengthens Malaysia’s reputation globally and contributes to the country’s progress.
The meeting reflects Malaysia’s wider diplomatic outreach in Africa, combining economic initiatives with cultural and human connections. By engaging with the diaspora, Anwar reinforced the idea that Malaysians abroad play a vital role in shaping the nation’s image and expanding its networks across continents.
