The Borneo Trail Classic is no ordinary marathon. It’s a test of endurance, mental fortitude, and the sheer will to push through the toughest terrains of Sarawak. On 1st September 2024, Cindy Lim Set Hiang braved the 50km Women’s Open category in the heart of Borneo, turning her unprepared leap of faith into an inspiring story of resilience and determination.
For Cindy, the decision to participate came just a week before the race. Without the luxury of training or preparation, she found herself standing at the starting line, surrounded by seasoned runners. As the clock struck midnight, the countdown began—3, 2, 1—and off they went, sprinting into the forest.
Despite the excitement, a sense of fear lingered as she dashed through the unfamiliar terrain. “I was a bit nervous about getting lost,” Cindy recalled. “But I kept pushing myself to run as fast as I could.” In no time, the runners were spread thin, and Cindy found herself nearly alone in the darkness of the forest.
The night wasn’t kind to her. With a malfunctioning headlamp, Cindy stumbled and fell multiple times, battling both the physical challenges and the psychological strain of running in near-complete darkness. The forest wasn’t the only obstacle; endless rivers cut through her path, making each step more treacherous than the last.
As dawn broke, the first rays of sunlight brought a renewed sense of hope. The light not only illuminated the path but also eased the tension that had built up during the night. However, the challenges were far from over. With the changing landscape, Cindy faced steep uphill and downhill sections that pushed her already tired body to the brink.
Running through the daylight was slightly easier, but Cindy’s body soon began to protest. Nausea and exhaustion took their toll, leading to bouts of vomiting. Despite the setbacks, she had packed medication that offered some relief. Cindy’s resolve only strengthened as she counted down each kilometer, determined to finish what she had started.
Throughout her journey, Cindy found solace in the unexpected kindness of strangers. The staff at the water stations played a crucial role, not only by providing refreshments but also through their words of encouragement that kept her spirits high. “I’m incredibly grateful to the staff at the water stations who provided me with drinks and words of encouragement along the way,” Cindy shared.
Cindy’s journey would not have been possible without the unwavering support of her loved ones. A special thanks went to her sister, Alpha Siet Fah, who helped secure her registration spot, and to Daniel Huang and her younger brother Xian Wen Owen, who drove her to the race. The cheers and encouragement from her family, relatives, and friends gave her the motivation she needed to cross the finish line.
Despite the grueling 50km journey filled with obstacles, Cindy crossed the finish line without injury—a testament to her indomitable spirit. “Congratulations to all the contestants and friends who completed the race,” Cindy said, reflecting on her experience. “Never give up, and let’s do it again next year. I’m thankful to have finished without any injuries!”
