KUCHING – Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) has introduced a new digital initiative to enhance city maintenance with the launch of the Green Management System (GMS). The announcement was made during a two-day seminar on landscape maintenance, grass cutting and drain cleaning, held from 14 to 15 July 2026.
The seminar was officiated by Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department, Datuk Dr Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Junaidi, who also serves as Project Coordinator for the Regional Development Agency, Kuching North City Hall and Islamic Affairs. A total of 150 participants attended, including contractors and DBKU officers responsible for landscape and public facility upkeep.
The GMS application represents DBKU’s proactive step towards modernising the monitoring of landscape maintenance. By integrating digital technology, the system allows for structured oversight, digital record-keeping, and streamlined verification of completed work. It also enables contractor performance evaluation based on monitoring data, while identifying issues or non-compliance for faster corrective action.
Officials explained that the system is designed to strengthen transparency, accountability and efficiency in managing maintenance contracts. With GMS, every task carried out must meet established specifications and quality standards. This ensures that public spaces remain clean, safe and conducive for residents.
The initiative aligns with DBKU’s broader vision of smart city management. By adopting digital solutions, the council aims to deliver services that are more efficient, responsive and integrity-driven. The GMS is expected to improve the overall quality of life in Kuching North by ensuring that city maintenance is consistent and reliable.
In addition to the launch, DBKU presented the High Prestige Contractor Award to 10 contractors in recognition of their outstanding performance. The awards were handed out by Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman during the seminar.
The event was attended by several key figures, including Kuching North Mayor Dato Haji Hilmy bin Haji Othman, DBKU Council Members, DBKU Director Encik Ramzi bin Abdillah, Puan Durie Austine Tinggie representing the Ministry of Public Health, Housing and Local Government Sarawak, and Puan Maggie Tomeng, Deputy Director of the Development and Landscape Services Department.
DBKU has pledged to continue strengthening its maintenance management efforts to ensure that Kuching North remains a clean, attractive and safe environment. The council emphasised that the GMS is not only a technological upgrade but also a commitment to raising service standards for the benefit of city residents.
By combining digital innovation with community-focused governance, DBKU hopes to set a benchmark for other local authorities in Sarawak. The council’s approach reflects a growing emphasis on sustainable urban development, where technology plays a central role in maintaining public facilities and enhancing civic pride.
The Green Management System is expected to serve as a model for future initiatives, demonstrating how digital tools can transform traditional maintenance practices into more effective and transparent processes.
