The visit provided an opportunity for the judges to evaluate and verify MBKS’s environmental initiatives, sustainability programmes and best practices. The assessment is a crucial part of the award process, which recognises organisations and local authorities that demonstrate excellence in environmental management and sustainable development.

MBKS officials highlighted that the council has long prioritised environmental stewardship, with initiatives ranging from waste management improvements to green infrastructure projects. The council has also invested in community-driven programmes aimed at raising awareness of sustainability and encouraging residents to adopt eco-friendly practices.

The Premier of Sarawak Environmental Award, organised biennially, is considered one of the state’s most prestigious recognitions for environmental excellence. It serves as a platform to showcase innovative approaches to sustainability and to encourage continuous improvement among participating organisations.

During the site assessment, judges examined MBKS’s ongoing projects, including landscape management, recycling initiatives and public education campaigns. The council’s commitment to building a cleaner and greener city was emphasised, with officials noting that environmental sustainability is central to MBKS’s long-term vision for Kuching.

The council has also introduced measures to improve energy efficiency in public facilities, enhance urban greenery and strengthen waste reduction strategies. These efforts are designed to align with Sarawak’s broader environmental goals and contribute to the state’s sustainable development agenda.

MBKS expressed its determination to continue advancing environmental programmes, stressing that collaboration with the community is vital. By involving residents, businesses and stakeholders, the council aims to foster a culture of sustainability that benefits both the city and the wider region.

The site assessment marks a significant step in the award process, with judges expected to provide feedback that will guide MBKS in further strengthening its environmental initiatives. The council reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining high standards and ensuring that Kuching remains a model of sustainable urban development.

As the competition progresses, MBKS hopes its efforts will inspire other councils and organisations to adopt similar practices. The council’s participation in the award reflects its dedication to environmental responsibility and its role in shaping a greener future for Sarawak.
