GKCDA Launches RM7.9m Alternative Road in Siburan

SIBURAN – The Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) has officially commenced a major infrastructure initiative aimed at enhancing regional connectivity and stimulating local economic growth. The RM7.9 million alternative road construction project is designed to seamlessly link four distinct villages within the district, fostering improved access and mobility for residents.

The ambitious 3.4-kilometre development is scheduled for completion within a twelve-month timeframe. Upon finalisation, the new thoroughfare will directly connect Kampung Sungai Riset, Kampung Skudu, Kampung Plaman Payang, and Kampung Chupak. This strategic linkage is anticipated to significantly reduce travel times and provide a more reliable transport network for the local populace.

The project’s groundbreaking ceremony was held at Dewan Serin in Kampung Skudu, officiated by Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn. Serving as the Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, as well as the Tarat State Assemblyman and Chairman of the GKCDA Steering Committee, he highlighted the multifaceted benefits of the initiative.

Addressing the gathering, Dato Sri Roland emphasised the dual purpose of the infrastructure upgrade. “It will not only provide more comfortable communication facilities for the residents, but is also expected to boost local economic activities, especially in the tourism sector,” he stated during the event.

Indeed, the surrounding region possesses substantial, untapped potential for eco-tourism and recreational travel. A prime example is the nearby Kampung Panchor hot spring, a natural geothermal attraction that draws both locals and visitors seeking relaxation. Enhanced road access is projected to increase visitor footfall to this and other regional attractions, thereby generating new revenue streams for local enterprises.

The GKCDA itself was established following approval by the State Executive Council on 22 September 2022. Its primary mandate is to identify, plan, and prioritise socio-economic development across its designated jurisdiction, ensuring that rural and semi-rural areas receive targeted infrastructural support.

During the ceremony, the Minister also revealed that several additional development projects are currently in the advanced planning stages under the GKCDA banner. He appealed for sustained collaboration among community leaders, tribal representatives, and local residents to guarantee the seamless execution of these forthcoming initiatives.

The event was attended by a distinguished group of government officials and community stakeholders. Among the notable figures present were Datuk Martin Ben, Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development, who also serves as the Kedup Assemblyman.

Also in attendance were Bukit Semuja Assemblyman John Ilus and Tebedu Assemblyman Dr. Simon Sinang Bada. They were joined by Serian Division Resident Mackos Sibong, GKCDA Special Administrative Officer Ik Pahon Joyik, and representatives from the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR). Various department heads, tribal leaders, and local residents also gathered to witness the historic milestone.

From a broader perspective, the construction of this alternative route addresses long-standing logistical challenges faced by the communities in the Tarat constituency. Reliable road networks are fundamental to ensuring timely access to healthcare, education, and emergency services. Furthermore, they facilitate the efficient transportation of agricultural produce to larger markets, directly supporting the livelihoods of local farmers.

The involvement of the Sarawak Public Works Department ensures that the construction adheres to stringent quality and safety standards, guaranteeing a durable roadway capable of withstanding the region’s tropical climate. This meticulous planning reflects a commitment to delivering long-term value rather than short-term fixes.

By prioritising such targeted infrastructural investments, the state government demonstrates a clear commitment to bridging the development gap between urban centres and rural districts. The GKCDA’s proactive approach ensures that development is not merely concentrated in the city, but is equitably distributed to uplift all constituent communities.

As construction progresses over the coming year, residents can anticipate temporary disruptions, which authorities have pledged to manage with minimal inconvenience. Ultimately, the completion of this RM7.9 million project will stand as a testament to the collaborative efforts of the government and the community, paving the way for a more prosperous and interconnected future for the Siburan district.
