The incident prompted a swift response from the Civil Defence Force (APM), who deployed the MyAspa O Charlie Squad to the location.

The complainant had alerted authorities after discovering the nest near their home. Upon arrival, APM members carried out a safety assessment to ensure the operation could be conducted without risk to residents.

The inspection revealed a ground wasp nest, roughly the size of a takraw ball, situated on a tree close to the complainant’s property.

The team proceeded with controlled destruction by burning, a method often used to eliminate such nests safely.

The operation was completed without incident, and four personnel later returned to the Serian District Operations Control Centre (PKOD).

Officials explained that wasp nests can pose serious risks to communities, particularly when located near residential areas.

Ground wasps are known for their aggressive behaviour when disturbed, and their stings can cause severe allergic reactions in some individuals.

Prompt removal is therefore essential to prevent accidents and ensure public safety. This case highlights the importance of community vigilance and cooperation with emergency services.

Residents are encouraged to report hazardous situations such as insect nests, fallen trees, or other environmental dangers that may threaten safety.

APM continues to remind the public that its teams are prepared to respond to a wide range of emergencies, from medical cases to environmental hazards.

The Civil Defence Force operates under the principle of “Ready, Fast & With Integrity”, reflecting its commitment to professionalism and efficiency.

District-level squads such as MyAspa O Charlie play a crucial role in ensuring rapid intervention, particularly in rural communities where immediate access to specialised services may be limited.

Local authorities have reiterated that emergency services are available around the clock. For urgent cases, residents in Serian and surrounding areas can contact the Civil Defence Force at 082711292.

As Sarawak strengthens its emergency response framework, incidents like this demonstrate the value of preparedness and the dedication of frontline personnel.

The destruction of the wasp nest in Kampung Sorak Melayu serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of environmental hazards and the importance of swift, coordinated action to protect communities.
