BINTULU – The Sarawak Road Transport Department (JPJ) has stepped up enforcement against overloaded and unsafe trade vehicles through a joint operation led by JPJ Bintulu and supported by the Kuching Mobile Weighing Unit.
The initiative, known as Ops Overloading, began on 18 June and continued into the week, with inspections carried out across the district.
JPJ Sarawak Director, YBrs Tuan Norizan bin Jili, was present to oversee the operation, underscoring the department’s commitment to ensuring compliance with road safety regulations.
The campaign focused on monitoring commercial vehicles, particularly lorries, to prevent practices that could endanger road users.
During the enforcement period, 85 lorries were inspected. Authorities detected a range of offences, including overloading, unsafe cargo arrangements, breaches of LPKP permit conditions, and drivers operating without valid licences such as the Commercial Driving Licence (CDL) or the Goods Driving Licence (GDL).
Other violations included poor tyre maintenance and technical faults that compromised vehicle safety. JPJ confirmed that enforcement action was taken against all detected offences in line with existing laws.
Officials stressed that overloaded or poorly maintained vehicles pose serious risks, not only to drivers but also to other road users. Such conditions can lead to accidents with potentially severe consequences.
The department reiterated its stance that offences involving commercial vehicles will not be tolerated. JPJ Sarawak views these violations as a direct threat to public safety and pledged to continue intensifying operations to curb irresponsible practices.
“Vehicles that are overloaded or poorly maintained not only threaten the lives of drivers and other road users but can also have worse consequences,” JPJ stated.
The department emphasised that safety must remain a priority for all operators and drivers in the commercial transport sector.
Ops Overloading reflects JPJ’s broader strategy to strengthen road safety enforcement across Sarawak. By targeting high-risk offences, the department aims to reduce accident rates and encourage compliance among transport operators.
The operation also highlights the importance of collaboration between different JPJ units to ensure effective monitoring and enforcement.
As JPJ continues to expand its enforcement activities, commercial vehicle operators are urged to adhere strictly to regulations.
The department has made clear that it will sustain these operations to safeguard lives and maintain order on Sarawak’s roads.
