KAPIT – The Road Transport Department (JPJ) Kapit Branch has stepped up enforcement with the launch of its 2026 Motorcycle Ops and Chinese New Year Ops, aimed at keeping roads safe during the festive season.
On 16 February, officers carried out patrols and monitoring around Kapit town. They inspected 121 vehicles, including motorcycles, private cars, and commercial vehicles.
The checks uncovered multiple offences. Some motorists were driving without valid licences. Others had expired Motor Vehicle Licences, known as LKM, or lacked insurance coverage. Officers also found technical issues such as unsafe modifications and poorly maintained vehicles.
JPJ said these operations form part of its ongoing effort to cut accident rates and improve compliance with traffic laws. Traffic usually increases during festive periods, which raises the risk of crashes. Strong enforcement helps protect both drivers and pedestrians.
A JPJ spokesperson said inspections will continue throughout the year. Road users are reminded to ensure their documents are valid and their vehicles are roadworthy before travelling.
The move aligns with broader enforcement efforts across Sarawak, where similar operations focus on vehicle condition, driver competence, and adherence to traffic regulations during peak travel seasons.
Residents in Kapit welcomed the stepped-up checks. Many believe stricter enforcement discourages reckless driving and improves overall safety. Community leaders also urged motorists to take responsibility by maintaining their vehicles and following the rules.
The Kapit Branch confirmed enforcement will not stop after the festive period. Operations will continue at intervals to maintain compliance, especially in rural areas where road conditions pose added challenges.
As families gather for the celebrations, JPJ’s message is direct: safe journeys start with responsible driving and proper vehicle care.
