LONG BANGA – The newly completed Modular Steel Bridge, commonly known as a Bailey Bridge, across Sungai Baleh in Long Banga was officially opened on 24 June 2026.
The ceremony was officiated by Yang Berhormat Datuk Gerawat Gala, representing the Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
The 51-metre bridge represents a significant step in the Sarawak government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen rural infrastructure.
Officials highlighted that the project demonstrates a clear commitment to improving connectivity for communities in remote areas, ensuring safer and more reliable access for residents.
The bridge reconnects the Long Banga–Bario route, a vital artery for population movement, logistics services, and the delivery of essential supplies.
With the completion of the project, residents can now enjoy smoother travel, reducing travel time and improving the continuity of local economic and social activities.
Community leaders noted that the bridge will play a crucial role in supporting rural development, particularly in facilitating trade and access to healthcare and education.
Improved connectivity is expected to enhance opportunities for local businesses and strengthen ties between communities in the interior and urban centres.
The Bailey Bridge design, known for its durability and modular construction, has been widely used in rural infrastructure projects across Sarawak.
Its installation in Long Banga reflects the government’s strategy of deploying practical solutions to address the challenges of remote terrain and limited accessibility.
Datuk Gerawat Gala emphasised that the project is part of a broader initiative to bridge the development gap between urban and rural areas.
He stated that quality infrastructure is essential to ensuring equitable growth and improving the lives of people in Sarawak’s interior.
The Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) has been tasked with implementing similar projects across the state, reinforcing the government’s vision of inclusive development.
By prioritising infrastructure in rural districts, the state aims to create opportunities for communities that have historically faced challenges due to geographical isolation.
Residents expressed optimism that the new bridge will ease daily travel and contribute to long-term improvements in living standards.
The project is also seen as a symbol of the government’s commitment to rural communities, ensuring that development reaches even the most remote corners of Sarawak.
The opening of the Sungai Baleh Bailey Bridge marks another milestone in Sarawak’s infrastructure development journey, underscoring the importance of connectivity in fostering economic growth, social cohesion, and community resilience.
