ADDIS ABABA – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim held a brief but meaningful meeting with President Taye Atske Selassie Amde of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, reaffirming Malaysia’s commitment to elevate bilateral ties as both nations commemorate 60 years of diplomatic relations.
During the meeting, both leaders agreed that future cooperation should move beyond traditional areas into high-value sectors such as semiconductors, the halal economy, cybersecurity, and other strategic fields that can drive shared growth and prosperity.
Anwar Ibrahim highlighted Malaysia’s commitment through the reopening of the Malaysian Embassy in Addis Ababa in September 2025, recognising Ethiopia’s role as an important diplomatic hub on the African continent.
He also welcomed the establishment of the Ethiopian Embassy in Kuala Lumpur, describing it as another step in strengthening the bridge of friendship, trust, and bilateral cooperation.
“May the relationship between Malaysia and Ethiopia continue to be strengthened with the spirit of genuine friendship, mutual confidence and benefits felt by the people of both countries,” he said.
Diplomatic observers note that this renewed direction reflects Malaysia’s MADANI Diplomacy framework, which emphasises inclusivity, respect, and sustainable partnerships.
Ethiopia, as host of the African Union headquarters, is seen as a gateway for Malaysia’s engagement with the wider continent.
The meeting underscores both nations’ determination to expand cooperation into strategic sectors that align with global economic trends, while reinforcing six decades of friendship built on mutual respect and shared aspirations.
