KUCHING – The Borneo Convention Centre recently served as the focal point for a significant national gathering dedicated to workplace safety within the healthcare sector.
On 5 August 2026, the Sarawak State Health Department had the distinct privilege of hosting the Ministry of Health Malaysia’s annual World Occupational Safety and Health Day celebration.
This major event drew together approximately 350 personnel from across the country, highlighting the federal government’s commitment to staff welfare.
The proceedings were officially opened by Dato’ Dr Mohd Azman bin Yacob, who serves as the Deputy Director General of Health (Medicine). He was supported during the ceremony by several key figures, including Dr Azlihanis Binti Hadi from the Risk Management and Clinical Surveillance Branch.
Also present was Dr Azlee Bin Ayub, the Deputy Director of State Health (Medicine) for Sarawak, underscoring the collaborative nature of this national initiative.
A number of distinguished guests joined the leadership team to mark the occasion. These included state health directors from various regions, such as Dr Ummi Kalthom Binti Shamsudin of Selangor and Dr Haji Saiful Azlan Bin Haji Sharif representing Pahang.
Terengganu was also represented at the highest level by Dato’ Dr Wan Abdul Rahim Bin Wan Muhammad, demonstrating the nationwide participation in this year’s observance.
Central to the 2026 celebration was a theme focusing on psychosocial factors in professional settings. The chosen message emphasised that fostering a healthy psychological environment is no longer merely an optional benefit but a fundamental requirement.
Organisers stressed that such conditions are essential for building resilient institutions capable of nurturing productive and prosperous employees. This perspective aligns with modern understandings of occupational health that extend beyond physical safety to include mental and emotional wellbeing.
Recognition of excellence formed a core component of the programme, with awards presented for best practices in occupational safety and health. Kuala Lumpur Hospital secured the top honour for Type 1 facilities, whilst Putrajaya Hospital was recognised in the Type 2 category.
In the Type 3 division, Kepala Batas Hospital in Penang emerged as the winner. Notably, Kanowit Hospital received the award for Type 4 hospitals, bringing recognition to Sarawak. Sentosa Hospital, also located in Sarawak, won the medical institution category.
Further accolades were distributed to specific programmes demonstrating outstanding safety standards. The Bentong District Dental Health Office in Pahang was honoured for its dental health initiatives.
Meanwhile, the Klang District Health Office in Selangor received the award for the best public health programme. These distinctions serve to highlight innovative approaches to risk management and staff protection across different types of healthcare facilities throughout Malaysia.
Creative expression regarding safety awareness was also celebrated through a poster competition. Muhamad Ridzuwan bin Mohamad Rafee from Baling Hospital in Kedah was named champion. Arman bin Hamsah of Lahad Datu Hospital in Sabah took the runner-up position.
Third place was awarded to Aiman Syakirin bin Zaidun from the Mersing District Health Office in Johor. Such competitions encourage staff to engage actively with safety messaging in accessible formats.
A pivotal moment occurred with the unveiling of new resources aimed at protecting healthcare workers from infectious diseases. Authorities launched updated guidelines specifically addressing tuberculosis prevention and management for ministry staff.
Accompanying this document was a newly developed training module for 2026. These tools represent a concrete step towards mitigating biological hazards and ensuring safer working conditions for those on the front lines of patient care.
Looking forward, local organisers have reaffirmed their dedication to advancing safety cultures within Sarawak. Particular attention will be paid to psychosocial wellbeing and comprehensive health protection measures.
