KUCHING – Residents in the rapidly expanding areas of Batu 10 and Kota Padawan now have access to enhanced primary healthcare facilities following the completion of a new extension building.
The RM300,000 project at the Maternal and Child Health Clinic (KKIA) was officially declared finished during a ceremony held on Friday. This infrastructure upgrade marks a significant milestone in addressing the growing medical needs of the local population.
Batu Kitang State Assemblyman Dato Ir Lo Khere Chiang officiated the opening and highlighted the necessity of the expansion. He noted that demographic shifts and housing developments have substantially increased patient numbers over recent years.
The clinic currently serves a catchment area comprising more than 50 residential estates and five villages, catering to a community exceeding 30,000 individuals. Such population density requires robust health infrastructure to maintain service quality.
The newly constructed facility is designed to improve both comfort and operational efficiency for staff and patients alike. Measuring 56 feet by 28 feet, the addition houses several critical functional spaces.
These include a dedicated women’s health examination room, a dental clinic, a meeting room, and secure file storage areas. By segregating these services, the clinic can manage patient flow more effectively and reduce waiting times for routine consultations.
Beyond internal amenities, the project encompassed essential external upgrades to support the expanded footprint. Contractors installed a new air conditioning system to ensure a conducive environment within the treatment rooms.
External works involved reconstructing drainage systems to prevent flooding issues and creating additional parking bays to accommodate higher visitor volumes. The existing clinic structure also received a fresh coat of paint, improving the overall aesthetic appeal of the public health asset.
Dato Ir Lo emphasised that this development continues a long-term commitment to strengthening local healthcare delivery. The KKIA Kota Padawan has undergone multiple phases of improvement since it first began operations in 1994.
Each upgrade reflects changing community needs and government responsiveness to ground-level feedback. The latest investment ensures the facility remains relevant and capable of serving future generations in the district.
Community leaders are now urging residents to maximise the utility of these improved facilities. Priority services available at the clinic include antenatal and postnatal care, child immunisation programmes, and periodic health screenings.
Health education initiatives and early detection check-ups are also key components of the clinic’s mandate. Full utilisation of these resources is vital for maintaining public health standards and preventing chronic conditions through proactive care.
The opening ceremony was attended by several key stakeholders who play integral roles in local governance and health administration. Among the guests were Padawan Municipal Council Chairman Tan Kai and Lim Eng Huat, Chairman of the Batu 10 Chinese Mutual Benefit Association.
Their presence underscores the collaborative relationship between elected representatives, local authorities, and community organisations in advancing public welfare projects.
Medical professionals overseeing the area’s health services also participated in the event. Dr Johnny Pangkas, Kuching Division Health Officer, and Dr Jennet Micheal, Family Physician at Kota Sentosa Health Clinic, were present to witness the handover.
Their involvement highlights the integration of this facility into the broader divisional healthcare network. Continued professional oversight will ensure that the expanded capacity translates directly into better health outcomes for families across Kota Padawan and surrounding neighbourhoods.
