New Mobile Navy Base Proposed to Boost Sabah East Coast Security

New Mobile Navy Base Proposed to Boost Sabah East Coast Security

SEMPORNA, SABAH — The Malaysian Government is considering a major upgrade to its maritime defense by replacing the existing Tun Sharifah Rodziah Marine Platform with a more advanced and mobile operational base. This new concept aims to strengthen frontline security, especially along the east coast of Sabah, which has long been a focus area for national safety.

Defense Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said that the current platform, which has been a key operational base in the waters of Semporna under the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN), may soon be retired to make way for a mobile front operations base. This strategic move, he explained, is part of the government’s efforts to improve the agility and effectiveness of security forces in the region.

“A mobile operations base will allow our navy to respond more swiftly and flexibly to any threats. It provides continuous strength and support to any security operation in Sabah, especially in coastal and island areas vulnerable to intrusions,” said Mohamed Khaled during a press briefing.

He added that the Tun Sharifah Rodziah platform has played a crucial role in controlling security threats such as kidnappings and illegal intrusions. With its presence, such incidents have been reduced to a minimum, proving the effectiveness of having a strong naval presence in the area.

The proposed base will be equipped with modern facilities and mobility features that enable rapid deployment to hotspots, unlike the current static platform. This move also aligns with ongoing efforts to support the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) and its mission to safeguard national borders.

The government’s consideration reflects its continued commitment to maintaining peace and ensuring the safety of coastal communities, fishermen, and tourists who frequent the area. — Bernama
