SIMPANG NYABOR – The Saratok District Council, in collaboration with Timuran Kembangan and the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), successfully organised an E-Waste and Used Cooking Oil Collection Campaign at Dewan Lakin, Simpang Nyabor, on 11 July 2026.
The initiative received encouraging support from the local community, reflecting growing awareness of the importance of safe and sustainable waste management.
Running from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, the campaign provided residents with the opportunity to dispose of unwanted electrical and electronic items, as well as used cooking oil, in an environmentally responsible manner.
Participants were able to exchange these items for cash and essential goods, a move designed to incentivise recycling practices and encourage greater participation.
The organisers emphasised that the campaign was not only about waste collection but also about educating the public on the dangers of improper disposal.
Electronic waste, if left unmanaged, can release harmful substances into the environment, while used cooking oil often contributes to pollution when discarded carelessly.
By offering practical solutions, the programme aimed to reduce these risks and promote healthier living conditions.
The initiative also aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those related to health and well-being, sustainable cities and communities, responsible consumption and production, climate action, and partnerships for sustainable development.
By linking local action to global objectives, the campaign demonstrated how community-level programmes can contribute to broader sustainability agendas.
Residents who attended expressed appreciation for the opportunity to participate, noting that the exchange system provided tangible benefits while reinforcing the importance of environmental responsibility.
For many, the campaign served as a reminder that small actions at the community level can collectively make a significant impact.
The Saratok District Council extended its gratitude to all agencies, partners, contractors, and staff who contributed to the success of the campaign.
Officials highlighted that cooperation and commitment from all parties were crucial in ensuring smooth organisation and effective outcomes.
Environmental experts have long stressed the need for greater public involvement in waste management. Campaigns such as this one not only provide practical solutions but also foster a culture of sustainability, encouraging communities to take ownership of their environmental footprint.
The success of the Simpang Nyabor campaign is expected to pave the way for similar initiatives across Sarawak.
By combining education, incentives, and community participation, such programmes can help build cleaner, greener, and more resilient communities.
As Sarawak continues to prioritise sustainable development, the E-Waste and Used Cooking Oil Collection Campaign stands as an example of how local councils and partners can work together to address pressing environmental challenges while supporting community well-being.
