Speaking at a strategic dialogue with industry representatives at the British Muslim Heritage Centre on 4 May, the premier explained that artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly evolved from a supportive tool into a central force driving global development strategies.

The session was hosted by Manchester Rusholme Member of Parliament Afzal Khan and attended by senior Sarawak officials.

The Premier noted that the past decade has seen AI transform economic structures worldwide, propelled by advances in chip technology and enhanced data storage systems.

He stressed that this transformation has now entered a new stage, where AI is increasingly recognised as “strategic intelligence” rather than simply a technological aid.

“Five years ago, we were only talking about AI, but today it has become very important. In the span of ten years, AI has advanced to a higher level, and in the next five years, it will evolve into strategic intelligence,” he said.

He further emphasised that data has become a vital resource, not only for economic growth but also for strengthening social responsibility. “Data will provide us with something new. It is a resource that enables us to move forward, whether in the economy or in social responsibility,” he explained.

The Premier highlighted that technological progress must be supported by a complete ecosystem, including microchips, data centres, and information management systems.

He added that Sarawak is committed to building capacity in these areas, with a strong focus on human capital development.

This includes sending students abroad to gain expertise and fostering intellectual property ownership to secure long-term benefits.

The event also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at reinforcing strategic collaboration and exploring new opportunities that could benefit Sarawak and contribute to global innovation.

Among those present were Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, State Secretary Datuk Amar Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63, and State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, Financial Secretary Dato Sri Wan Lizozman Wan Omar, Deputy State Secretary (Planning and Economic Development) Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, along with senior officials and agency heads.
