KUCHING (Dec 28): The Sarawak Private Medical Practitioners Association has appealed to the Health Ministry (MOH) to revise the general practitioners (GP) consultation fee schedule, which has remained unchanged since 2002.
Speaking at the association’s 50th Golden Anniversary Dinner, its president, Dr. Liew Shan Fap, emphasized the urgent need to update the fee structure to ensure the sustainability of GP practices and maintain the quality of primary healthcare services.
“The current GP consultation fee schedule, introduced over two decades ago, is no longer relevant. Without revisions, GP practices face significant challenges that could compromise primary healthcare quality,” Dr. Liew said.
He highlighted that stagnant fees not only hinder fair remuneration for medical professionals but also threaten the viability of private clinics that play a critical role in Malaysia’s healthcare system.
Private healthcare facilities, often chosen for their efficiency, continuity of care, and personalized doctor-patient relationships, accounted for 42.1% of Malaysia’s total healthcare expenditure of RM78.2 billion in 2021. However, Dr. Liew cautioned that these advantages should not come at the cost of affordability.
“By keeping our services affordable, we reduce the strain on public healthcare facilities, contributing to a healthier and more resilient Sarawak and Malaysia,” he explained.
Dr. Liew also called for a balanced approach to ensure private healthcare remains accessible to all, highlighting the importance of reforms that benefit both practitioners and patients.
At the event, Dr. Liew presented the Doctor of the Year Award to Dr. Morni Abu Samad and the Sarawak Healthcare Leadership Award to Datuk Amar Dr. Sim Kui Hian for their exceptional contributions to the state’s healthcare sector.
