Speaking at a Leaders’ Dinner with community and tribal heads of Sibu Division on 10 July 2026, Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, emphasised the importance of harnessing Sibu’s strategic advantages as one of the central region’s key economic centres.

Among the government’s priorities is the expansion of communication networks through the construction and upgrading of road infrastructure. These improvements are expected to strengthen links between urban, rural, and interior areas, ensuring that communities across the division benefit from better access to services and opportunities.

The Premier noted that the phased acquisition of logging roads by the government will bring significant benefits once upgraded and maintained as public facilities. This initiative is intended to provide rural residents with safer and more reliable routes, thereby improving access to basic amenities, education, healthcare, and economic activities.

“We want Sibu to be developed as a new growth centre that can generate economic opportunities for the people,” he said, underlining the government’s vision for balanced development across Sarawak.

Beyond physical infrastructure, attention is also being directed towards strengthening emerging economic sectors, advancing digital transformation, and enhancing logistics capabilities. These measures are designed to make Sibu more competitive in attracting investments, while also creating new avenues for job creation and entrepreneurship.

The Premier stressed that cooperation between government agencies, community leaders, and residents is vital to ensure that development plans are implemented effectively. He highlighted that inclusive participation will help maximise the impact of projects, ensuring that growth translates into tangible improvements in community well-being.

Observers note that Sibu’s central location and existing economic base make it well-placed to serve as a regional hub. With ongoing investments in infrastructure and digitalisation, the division is expected to play a pivotal role in Sarawak’s broader development agenda.

The government’s focus on Sibu reflects a wider strategy to diversify growth across the state, reducing reliance on traditional centres and ensuring that opportunities are spread more evenly. By strengthening connectivity and modernising facilities, Sarawak aims to create a more resilient and inclusive economy.

Community leaders at the dinner expressed support for the Premier’s vision, noting that improved infrastructure and investment opportunities will help sustain livelihoods and provide better prospects for younger generations. The emphasis on digital transformation was also welcomed, as it aligns with global trends and prepares Sibu for future challenges.

The Premier’s remarks underscore the government’s determination to transform Sibu into a dynamic growth hub, combining physical development with innovation and community engagement. With continued collaboration, the division is poised to become a model for sustainable and inclusive progress in Sarawak.
