Proposed Mini Library to Enhance Children’s Reading Experience
KUCHING : In an exciting development for Taman Hui Sing recreational park, plans are underway for a significant upgrade that includes the introduction of a mini library aimed at fostering a love for reading among children.
Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng announced that the project, budgeted at below RM2 million, is nearing finalization in the planning phase, with detailed designs already prepared.
Community Engagement and Feedback Process
“The proposal will soon be displayed at the park for residents to review and provide feedback. Once these inputs are incorporated and the plan is approved, we will proceed with the tendering process,” Mayor Wee disclosed during his remarks following a tree planting event along Jalan Sherip Masahor today.
He underscored the project’s dual purpose: not only enhancing the park’s recreational offerings but also promoting community and family cohesion.
Addressing Modern Challenges for Children
“Many children today spend their free time absorbed in digital devices while their parents are at work. With the introduction of the mini library, we aim to create a space where children can engage in constructive activities like reading and learning,” Mayor Wee explained. He also highlighted plans to involve retired educators to guide and support young readers.
Funding and Collaborative Efforts
Mayor Wee acknowledged the financial challenges associated with upgrading public spaces but expressed optimism about securing additional funding through collaborations with various organizations and stakeholders.
Green Initiative: Tree Planting Programme
In a separate but equally significant initiative, the tree planting programme organized by MBKS in partnership with Hui Sing Village Security and Development Committee (JKKK) and the Red Crescent Association Stampin Branch added 93 ‘Happiness’ trees (scientifically known as Garcinia subelliptica) along Jalan Sherip Masahor. This effort aims to enhance urban greenery and promote environmental sustainability.

Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili and Hui Sing JKKK chairman Kapitan Tan Gun Kee joined Mayor Wee and other dignitaries at the tree planting event, underscoring their commitment to enhancing the quality of life in the community through green initiatives and improved recreational facilities.
