KRIAN – A day of significant cultural and educational milestones unfolded in the rural heartlands of Sarawak as YB Friday Belik, the State Assemblyman for N.39 Krian, participated in two distinct community ceremonies.
The events, held on 18 July 2026, highlighted the deep interconnection between traditional customs, spiritual practices, and academic achievement within the local indigenous communities.
The day began in the morning at Rh Kayas, located in the Tembawai Panjai Lempa area. Here, a solemn blessing ceremony was conducted to consecrate a newly constructed longhouse.
The ritual was led by Retired Archdeacon Fr Jackson Jarraw, whose presence underscored the harmonious blend of Christian faith and traditional Iban customs that characterises many longhouse communities in the region.
The event drew a considerable crowd, including relatives of the longhouse residents and neighbours from surrounding settlements. Such gatherings are pivotal in rural Sarawak, serving not only as religious observances but also as opportunities to reinforce social bonds and communal support networks.
The completion of a new longhouse is a major achievement for any community, representing years of planning, collective effort, and financial commitment.
Following the morning proceedings, the assemblyman travelled to the Joan Spg Kabo Longhouse for an afternoon celebration. This event was dedicated to giving thanks for the recent professional appointment of En Mudie anak Jantai, who has assumed the role of Principal at SMK Kalaka.
The thanksgiving ceremony is a traditional way for the community to honour individual achievements and seek blessings for future endeavours.
En Mudie, who previously served as the Senior Assistant Administrator at SMK Saratok, took up his new post three weeks prior to the ceremony. His promotion marks a significant career progression and reflects the growing representation of local talent in educational leadership roles across the state.
The appointment has been welcomed by the community, who view it as a source of pride and inspiration for younger generations.
YB Friday Belik used the occasion to extend his congratulations to the new principal. He expressed hope that En Mudie would continue to achieve success in his new capacity, contributing to the development of students and the broader educational landscape in the Kalaka district.
The assemblyman’s presence at both events demonstrated his commitment to engaging with constituents at all levels, from housing infrastructure to educational advancement.
The dual nature of the day’s activities illustrates the multifaceted role of community leaders in rural areas. They are often called upon to participate in both spiritual and secular celebrations, bridging the gap between traditional ways of life and modern professional aspirations.
For En Mudie, the thanksgiving ceremony provided a moment to reconnect with his roots before fully immersing himself in the responsibilities of school leadership.
Local residents praised the assemblyman for taking the time to attend these personal and communal milestones. In remote areas where access to state representatives can sometimes be limited due to geographical challenges, such visits are highly valued.
They serve as a reminder that the government remains attentive to the needs and achievements of rural populations.
The blessing of the new longhouse at Rh Kayas also highlights ongoing improvements in living standards and housing conditions in the interior.
As communities grow and evolve, the construction of new longhouses ensures that traditional communal living arrangements can be maintained while incorporating modern safety and comfort standards.
As the day concluded, the sentiment among attendees was one of gratitude and optimism. The successful blending of religious blessing, community celebration, and professional recognition serves as a testament to the resilience and unity of the people in the Krian constituency.
It reinforces the idea that progress in education and infrastructure goes hand in hand with the preservation of cultural identity and social cohesion.
