SEBUYAU – The Traditional Archery Championship 2025 (Piala YB Dato Sri Haji Julaihi bin Haji Narawi) brought renewed energy to the Archery Range at Kampung Jalan Sawmill in Sebuyau on Sunday, drawing numerous archers and community supporters from the local area.
At the tournament’s opening, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Sarawak’s Minister of Utilities and Telecommunications and Sebuyau’s State Assemblyman, urged organisers to maintain the event as an annual fixture.
He stated that hosting such competitions helps to nurture good health, sportsmanship, discipline and focus, especially among younger participants.
In a show of support for local archery development, Dato Sri Julaihi authorised the distribution of 10 units of traditional archery equipment and 10 modern devices for use by regional clubs.
The competition itself featured close contests with strong displays of precision and skill. In the men’s division, Azam secured the championship title, with Fahmi claiming second and Syamsul Bahri Ali taking third.
In the women’s division, Tetty Irma Abdul Shoki was the champion, followed by Huzaimah Ghazali in second and Habibu Chek in third.
Winners across categories received cash prizes, trophies, medals and hampers, while those placing fourth to tenth obtained medals and hampers as recognition for their efforts.
The event was attended by Ayuradiman Bujang (Sebuyau District Officer), Wan Yunus Wan Sait (Chairman of Sebuyau Archery Club), Adi Sapie (Deputy President of Traditional Archery), Asli Yahya (District Pemanca Melayu), and Abu Seman Suhaili (Penghulu Masyarakat Melayu Sebuyau).
Traditional archery events like this align with broader trends in Sarawak’s archery community. In 2025, Sarawak archers have already garnered multiple gold medals in larger competitions such as the Borneo Games.
By blending cultural heritage with competitive sport, the championship reinforces community identity while providing a platform for talent development in Sebuyau.
