LIMBANG – The Ngiling Bidai Ceremony at Rh Imau, Jalan Kubong Berawan Buloh, drew strong participation from local youths and residents, creating a vibrant atmosphere that highlighted the cultural richness of the Iban community.
The event, held on 4 June 2026, served as a meaningful platform to preserve traditions while encouraging the younger generation to take an active role in community life.
Deputy Minister of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development of Sarawak, Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail, praised the involvement of youths in the organising committee.
He noted that their participation provided valuable opportunities to develop skills in event management, communication, and leadership.
According to him, such exposure ensures that the younger generation remains connected to their cultural roots while gaining practical experience in community service.
Dr Abdul Rahman emphasised that the ceremony offered a direct avenue for youths to learn about customs, traditional performing arts, and cultural values from experienced elders.
“The Ngiling Bidai Ceremony is an important platform to foster the spirit of unity, strengthen noble values and ensure that the traditions of the Dayak community continue to be relevant and inherited by future generations,” he said during his address.
The Ngiling Bidai, a traditional Iban closing ceremony, symbolises the conclusion of the Gawai Dayak festival.
It is often marked by cultural performances, communal meals, and rituals that reinforce unity and respect for heritage.
This year’s event underscored the importance of intergenerational collaboration, with youths working alongside elders to ensure the success of the programme.
In addition to cultural activities, Dr Abdul Rahman announced progress on infrastructure projects in the area. He confirmed that road construction leading to the cemetery is nearing completion.
He also revealed that proposals for a bridge across Sungai Berawan to Jalan Kebun Rumah Panjang, along with a garden road project, are being considered under the Rural Transformation Project (RTP) or Rural Minor Project (MRP) for the Bukit Kota constituency next year.
Community leaders highlighted that the ceremony not only strengthens cultural identity but also reinforces social bonds among residents.
The active involvement of youths was seen as a positive sign for the continuity of traditions, ensuring that the Dayak heritage remains vibrant in modern times.
The event concluded with cultural performances and communal activities, reflecting the enduring spirit of togetherness that defines the Ngiling Bidai.
For many, the ceremony reaffirmed the importance of cultural preservation while showcasing the role of youths in shaping the future of Sarawak’s communities.
