BINTANGOR – More than 300 residents in the Meradong district received free health checks when 14 specialist doctors took to the field in a community programme at the Kampung Tanjung Bundung Community Hall on Sunday.
The programme was organised by the Tanjong Manis P.206 Parliamentary Service Centre in collaboration with the Sibu Lions Club, Rejang Medical Centre (RMC) and Rejang Charity, based on the principle that prevention is better than cure.
Tanjong Manis Member of Parliament, Dato Ir. Yusuf Abd Wahab, said the initiative aimed to raise public awareness of the importance of early checks to reduce the risk of serious diseases.
“Health needs to be given priority and early checks are very important to ensure that a disease can be detected and prevented before it becomes more chronic,” he said in his speech.
The services provided cover various areas of expertise including ophthalmology, ear, nose and throat (ENT), orthopaedics, paediatrics, women’s health, surgery as well as general health checks such as glucose levels.
Dato Ir. Yusuf explained that the response received was very encouraging when the number of participants exceeded the initial target of 150 people, with more than 300 residents attending to receive screening services.
This is not the first time that such a program has been organised. Previously, it was held at the Sare Community Hall, Tanjong Manis and Pulau Bruit, which also received a positive response from local residents.
In addition to health screening, the organizers also provided free glasses to eligible participants and distributed basic necessities to those in need.
Dato Ir. Yusuf hopes that residents can take full advantage of the advice given by experts and take follow-up steps at nearby clinics or hospitals to ensure continued health care.
He also donated RM3,000 to help the program run smoothly, thus showing support for efforts to improve the health of the community in the Meradong area.
