KUCHING — The Gedong district is set to undergo a major transformation within the next two to three years as part of a series of strategic development projects spearheaded by the Sarawak Government.
Special Representative of the Sarawak Premier in Gedong, Dato Sri Mohd Naroden Majais, revealed that several large-scale projects are already in motion, including the construction of a new mosque, an Integrated Administrative Centre, and a community hub. These facilities will be located across from Gedong town and are expected to significantly elevate the quality of life for local residents.
“Currently, we are seeing early-stage work such as land clearing and sand filling,” said Naroden. “But in the coming years, the mosque, administrative offices, and community centre will begin to take shape. This is just the beginning of a much broader transformation.”
He shared these updates following a courtesy visit to Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, at the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Complex on Monday. The delegation included Batang Sadong MP Rodiyah Sapiee and over 50 local leaders and party representatives from Gedong.
Naroden also detailed the implementation of several highway development packages that are poised to enhance connectivity and economic activity across the region. Key components include a new four-lane highway with a dedicated Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) route connecting Serian, Munggu Kupi, Isthmus, and Goebilt via Tanjung Embang.
Additional highway segments include:
- Upgrading of the old road from Isthmus to Samarahan
- A new connection from Isthmus to Simunjan
“These infrastructure upgrades, especially those linked to the Isthmus development area, will be game changers for Gedong,” he added.
In a related development, Premier Abang Zohari shared plans for a new air cargo service connecting Kuching to Singapore, aimed at expanding market access for Sarawak-made products. Naroden said this move will create major opportunities for farmers and small-scale entrepreneurs to export goods efficiently and competitively to international markets.
“This initiative supports the state’s broader mission to build a thriving agro-industrial sector with global reach,” Naroden stated.
The visit also served as an opportunity for the Gedong delegation to express their condolences to the Premier on the passing of his wife, the late Puan Sri Datuk Amar Juma’ani Tun Tuanku Bujang, who passed away on June 23. “Many of us could not attend the funeral or tahlil ceremony, and we are grateful to have met the Premier personally to convey our sympathies,” Naroden said.
With large-scale infrastructure, economic initiatives, and community-focused facilities underway, Gedong is on the path toward becoming a vibrant, modern, and connected district within Sarawak’s development framework.
