MBKS Launches 'Sew & Save' Eco-Initiative

MBKS Launches ‘Sew & Save’ Eco-Initiative

KUCHING – The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) is championing sustainable living through a new community programme focused on creative sewing.

The ‘Sew & Save’ initiative, run in partnership with the Persatuan Seni Jahitan Kreatif Malaysia, aims to curb household waste by teaching residents how to upcycle and repurpose old materials.

In his address, MBKS Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng underscored the significant environmental benefits of small, consistent actions.

He argued that giving a new lease of life to discarded fabrics not only minimises landfill contributions but also cultivates innovation and a shared duty to protect the environment.

The programme comprised three hands-on workshops, each dedicated to a specific sustainable craft. Attendees were instructed on methods to convert plastic waste into usable textile materials.

They also learned to fashion durable bags from denim and weave old garments into practical floor mats.

This project aligns with several key United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. These include fostering sustainable cities and communities, encouraging responsible consumption and production, and taking tangible climate action.

The event was also attended by Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili, council members, and senior officials.

By promoting the core principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle, MBKS hopes to inspire wider adoption of eco-conscious habits.

The council views such community engagement as a vital step towards a greener urban future and instilling a cost-effective, environmentally responsible mindset for generations to come.
