BARIO – The recent Bario Highland Jom Homestay Festival has successfully highlighted the region’s potential as a premier destination for community-based tourism.
The event showcased the unique cultural and natural attractions of the highlands to visitors.
According to Datuk Gerawat Gala, the Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), the festival represents more than just a tourist attraction.
He explained that the homestay programme acts as a significant platform for meaningful cultural exchange, which in turn enriches the local community.
The Mulu Assemblyman reiterated the state government’s firm commitment to strengthening the rural tourism sector.
This will be achieved through several key initiatives, including the Homestay Program, Community-Based Tourism, and Eco-Tourism Projects.
The objective is to establish tourism as a primary economic driver for rural areas such as Bario, Ba’kelalan, and Long Semadoh.
To support this growth, government efforts are also directed at enhancing fundamental infrastructure. Datuk Gerawat outlined ongoing work to improve basic facilities, road access, and digital communication networks.
Additionally, skills training programmes for homestay operators are being conducted to ensure high-quality service for tourists.
He also issued a call to action for the younger generation and local residents, urging them to continue demonstrating creativity in empowering the community tourism sector.
He expressed confidence that the Bario Highland Jom Homestay Festival could evolve into an iconic annual event for the Kelabit Highlands.
The festival’s significance was further underscored by the attendance of key officials, including Sarawak MOTAC Director Debbie Jenggut Nyelang and Bario Subdistrict Administrative Officer Richard Usah.
Their presence highlighted the collaborative approach between different levels of government in promoting sustainable rural tourism.
