Sarawak Government Sends Urgent Aid to Ulu Sebauh Flood Victims

BINTULU – The Sarawak government has stepped up relief efforts in Ulu Sebauh, Bintulu, by distributing immediate aid to flood-affected longhouses, underscoring its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of rural communities.

Special Duties Officer to the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Steven Kong Kai Seng, confirmed that he, together with staff from the Bintulu Member of Parliament Service Centre and members of the Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) Youth, visited the area to assess damage and identify urgent needs.

“The results of the survey have been communicated to Dato Sri Tiong King Sing and based on his instructions, immediate aid is channelled in priority to the most affected longhouses, especially Rumah Saging Layang, Sungai Ensaie, Jalan Ulu Sebauh,” Kong explained.

According to him, basic necessities have already been delivered to 45 families, helping to ease the burden of residents who continue to face challenges as floodwaters have not fully receded.

Several main routes remain submerged, forcing residents to rely on boats to coordinate the delivery of supplies in stages.

Local community leader Tuai Rumah Saging Layang expressed gratitude to the Sarawak government, PDP Youth, and all parties involved, describing the assistance as vital at a time when movement in and out of the area is still restricted.

When contacted, Dato Sri Tiong King Sing reaffirmed his commitment to monitoring the situation closely. He assured that additional aid would be provided if necessary, stressing that the welfare of flood victims remains a priority for the state government.

The floods in Ulu Sebauh have highlighted the vulnerability of longhouse communities in rural Sarawak, where access routes are often limited and emergency response requires coordinated efforts between government agencies and local residents.

Relief teams have emphasised that continued monitoring is essential, as water levels remain unstable and could pose further risks.

The Sarawak government’s swift response reflects its broader disaster management strategy, which focuses on immediate relief, community resilience, and long-term planning.

Officials have reiterated that aid distribution will continue until conditions stabilise, ensuring that affected families receive the support they need during recovery.
