Bintulu Development Authority Launches Used Cooking Oil Collection with Ramadan Traders

BINTULU – The Bintulu Development Authority (BDA) has rolled out a Used Cooking Oil Collection Campaign in conjunction with the Ramadan Bazaar 2026, marking another step in the city’s sustainability agenda.

The initiative, which began with the handover of storage containers on 25 and 26 February, involves 19 traders from the bazaar. The campaign is designed to encourage responsible waste management practices while supporting the principles of a circular economy.

By collecting used cooking oil, BDA aims to transform what is often considered waste into a valuable resource. Recycled cooking oil can be repurposed into biodiesel and other industrial products, reducing environmental pollution and contributing to cleaner urban surroundings.

Officials explained that the campaign is not only about recycling but also about ensuring safer and more organised management of waste oil in busy trading areas. With large numbers of visitors expected at the Ramadan Bazaar, proper disposal methods are seen as essential to maintaining hygiene and safety standards.

The initiative reflects BDA’s broader commitment to sustainability. In recent years, Bintulu has introduced several programmes to promote environmental awareness, including community recycling drives and green city projects. The Used Cooking Oil Collection Campaign adds to these efforts, reinforcing the city’s vision of long-term ecological responsibility.

BDA emphasised that the campaign is part of its mission to create a cleaner, safer, and more environmentally friendly bazaar environment. The authority hopes that the collaboration with traders will set an example for other community markets across Sarawak.

The slogan accompanying the campaign, “Ramadan Sustainable: Oil Collected, Nature Preserved”, highlights the dual focus on cultural celebration and environmental protection. It reflects the idea that festive traditions can coexist with modern sustainability practices, benefiting both the community and the environment.

As Ramadan approaches, BDA is optimistic that the campaign will raise awareness among traders and visitors alike, encouraging more responsible habits and contributing to the long-term sustainability of Bintulu city.
