MIRI – The long-standing traffic congestion affecting Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Senadin and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Pujut is set to ease following the completion of a RM1.8 million People’s Project under the Sarawak Government’s initiative for DUN N.75 Senadin.
The project, implemented over 12 months from February 2025 to February 2026, was designed to improve traffic flow and safety during peak school hours. It includes the construction of new parking areas, access roads, and junctions to reduce congestion.
Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Sarawak Transport Minister and Senadin State Assemblyman, said the initiative was a direct response to long-standing grievances from parents and residents.
“This project is an initiative of the People’s Project 2024. It is being implemented to address the problem of traffic congestion, which has long been a source of grievance among parents and local residents,” he explained during a site visit on Tuesday.
At SK Senadin, 108 new parking spaces have been built along with an additional exit route to ease congestion at the main junction. Meanwhile, SMK Pujut now has 174 new parking spaces, providing much-needed capacity during student drop-off and pick-up times.
Lee emphasised that the improvements will ensure smoother traffic flow and enhance safety in school areas. He also called for cooperation between schools, Parent-Teacher Associations (PIBG), and parents to ensure effective traffic management.
Additional measures such as clearer road markings, safety signs, and pedestrian crossings were suggested to further safeguard pupils and students.
The project reflects the government’s broader commitment to improving infrastructure and addressing community concerns. By enhancing access and safety, the initiative contributes to better educational environments and supports the wellbeing of families in Miri.
The site visit was also attended by Ha Pick Yieng, Principal of SMK Pujut, and Ahmad Othman, Headmaster of SK Senadin, who welcomed the improvements as a positive step for their schools.
With the completion of the People’s Project, parents and residents can expect a more orderly traffic system, reducing stress during peak hours and ensuring safer journeys for students.
