SIBU – A free dog vaccination, microchipping, and licensing programme was successfully conducted at Durin Bazaar on 28 March 2026, organised by the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC).
The initiative saw 33 dogs vaccinated and 18 new dog licence applications processed during the event. The programme was designed to encourage responsible pet ownership while supporting Sarawak’s ongoing efforts to prevent the spread of rabies.
Officials highlighted that vaccination and licensing are crucial steps in safeguarding both pets and communities.
Rabies remains a serious public health concern, and ensuring dogs are vaccinated helps reduce transmission risks.
Licensing, meanwhile, allows authorities to monitor pet populations more effectively and enforce compliance with animal health regulations.
Microchipping was also offered as part of the programme, providing a permanent form of identification for dogs.
This measure helps reunite lost pets with their owners and strengthens accountability among dog owners. SRDC emphasised that responsible ownership is key to rabies prevention.
The council reminded residents that every vaccinated and licensed dog contributes to the wider goal of creating a safer environment for families and communities across Sarawak.
The campaign reflects Sarawak’s broader strategy to combat rabies, which has included mass vaccination drives, licensing enforcement, and public education programmes since outbreaks were first reported in 2017.
Authorities continue to urge dog owners to participate in such initiatives, stressing that prevention is far more effective than treatment once rabies symptoms appear.
Local residents welcomed the programme, with many expressing appreciation for the opportunity to vaccinate and license their pets free of charge.
SRDC reiterated its commitment to organising similar events in the future, ensuring that rural communities have access to essential veterinary services.
The council concluded with a reminder: “Be a responsible owner – make sure your dog is licensed and vaccinated. Together, we will prevent the transmission of rabies.”
