KUCHING – Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, welcomed the European Union Ambassador to Malaysia, TYT Raffaele Daerr, during a courtesy visit at the Satria Pertiwi Complex on 27 April.
The meeting provided an opportunity for both sides to explore avenues of cooperation across several sectors.
Discussions centred on renewable energy, trade, tourism, education, and green technology, reflecting Sarawak’s growing role in sustainable development and international partnerships.
Ambassador Daerr reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to strengthening its investment presence in Malaysia, with particular interest in Sarawak’s renewable energy industry.
He highlighted the state’s potential in hydropower and other sustainable energy initiatives, noting that Sarawak’s resources and policies align with the EU’s broader green agenda.
The Premier welcomed the ambassador’s remarks, stressing the importance of expanding strategic networks that could accelerate Sarawak’s economic growth.
He emphasised that international collaboration is vital for the state’s long-term development, particularly in areas that support innovation and sustainability.
Sarawak has been positioning itself as a hub for renewable energy, with hydropower projects already contributing significantly to its energy mix.
The state government has also been promoting green technology and eco-tourism as part of its broader economic diversification strategy.
The Premier noted that partnerships with the EU could further enhance these efforts, opening doors for knowledge exchange, investment, and joint ventures.
Education was also highlighted as a key area of cooperation. Both parties discussed opportunities for academic collaboration, including student exchanges, research partnerships, and training programmes that could benefit Sarawak’s youth and workforce.
Tourism was another focal point, with the potential for European markets to play a larger role in promoting Sarawak’s cultural and natural attractions.
The courtesy visit underscored the EU’s interest in deepening ties with Sarawak while reinforcing the state’s ambition to attract global investment and expertise.
The Premier expressed optimism that the meeting would pave the way for more strategic collaborations in the future, strengthening Sarawak’s position as a forward-looking state committed to sustainable growth.
