BAU – A wasp nest discovered within the grounds of a secondary school in Bau prompted a swift response from the local Civil Defence Force on Thursday morning.
The Bau District Civil Defence Force confirmed that its District Operation Control Centre received an emergency call at 10.05 am on 18 June 2026.
The report, made by a member of the public, highlighted the presence of a ground wasp nest at SMK Paku Bau. Within minutes, officers were dispatched to the site to assess the situation.
The operation was coordinated by the district team, which ensured that safety measures were in place to protect both students and staff.
The wasp nest was located near the school compound, raising concerns about potential risks to those in the vicinity.
According to the Civil Defence Force, the team carried out a controlled removal of the nest. The operation was completed without incident, and no injuries were reported among the responders or the public. The authorities confirmed that the site was declared safe following the intervention.
Ground wasps, known for their aggressive behaviour when disturbed, can pose serious threats in populated areas.
Their stings are painful and, in some cases, may trigger allergic reactions. Schools and residential areas are particularly vulnerable, making rapid intervention essential to prevent harm.
The Bau Civil Defence Force emphasised that community cooperation plays a vital role in ensuring public safety.
Residents are encouraged to report similar cases promptly to the authorities rather than attempting to handle such situations themselves.
Emergency services are equipped with protective gear and trained procedures to manage insect-related hazards effectively.
This latest case reflects the ongoing commitment of local emergency teams to safeguard communities across Sarawak.
Similar operations have been carried out in recent years, particularly during the dry season when insect activity tends to increase.
The Civil Defence Force continues to remind the public that early reporting can prevent accidents and ensure swift resolution.
For emergencies in Bau, residents can contact the Civil Defence Force directly at 082-762925 or dial the national emergency line at 999. Authorities stress that these channels are available around the clock to respond to urgent situations.
The successful handling of the wasp nest at SMK Paku Bau underscores the importance of vigilance and preparedness in maintaining safety in schools and neighbourhoods.
It also highlights the professionalism of Sarawak’s emergency services, which remain dedicated to protecting the public from both natural and man-made hazards.
