KUCHING – Batu Kawa is set to welcome a large-scale shopping centre by 2030, marking a significant milestone in the area’s transformation into one of Kuching Division’s key growth hubs.
Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian announced the plan during the Batu Kawa Zone Community Leaders and Harvest Festival Open House at the Ang Cheng Ho Quarry Multipurpose Hall.
He emphasised that the initiative forms part of a broader strategy to modernise Batu Kawa with structured development and improved facilities.
Dr Sim, who also serves as the state assemblyman for Batu Kawah, explained that the proposed commercial centre would complement ongoing projects and enhance the area’s economic appeal.
“If we plan well and get the support of all parties, Batu Kawa can have a large shopping centre like Vivacity by 2030,” he said.
He highlighted that the success of the project depends on political stability, community unity and continued public support for government-led development agendas.
The Deputy Premier noted that Batu Kawa’s rapid growth in recent years, including rising property values and expanding commercial zones, demonstrates the area’s readiness to evolve into a modern city.
The envisioned shopping centre is expected to benefit local residents by providing access to modern retail and leisure facilities, while also attracting investors and creating new economic opportunities.
Dr Sim stressed that the development would strengthen Batu Kawa’s position as a prosperous urban centre within Kuching Division.
The announcement reflects the government’s commitment to balanced regional growth, ensuring that Batu Kawa’s development aligns with Sarawak’s wider economic and social objectives.
The project is anticipated to serve as a catalyst for further investment, boosting the area’s competitiveness and long-term sustainability.
Also present at the event were Cr Tan Kai, Chairman of the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), alongside community and tribal leaders (KMKK) and other distinguished guests.
Their attendance underscored the collaborative spirit behind Batu Kawa’s development agenda, which relies on strong partnerships between government, local authorities and the community.
As Batu Kawa continues to expand, the proposed shopping centre stands as a symbol of progress, promising to reshape the area’s landscape and provide a modern hub for commerce, lifestyle and community engagement by the end of the decade.
