KUCHING – Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, received a courtesy visit from Malaysia’s Minister of Youth and Sports, YB Dr Mohammad Taufiq bin Johari, at the Satria Pertiwi Complex on 27 April.
The meeting was also attended by Sarawak’s Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, YB Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, alongside Deputy Ministers Datuk Gerald Rentap Jabu and Datuk Dr Ripin Lamat. The permanent secretary of the ministry, Dzulkornain Masron, was also present.
Central to the discussions was the preparation for the 2027 SEA Games, where Sarawak has been designated as one of the four main clusters.
Both parties explored ways to strengthen collaboration to ensure the state’s readiness for the regional sporting event.
The Premier emphasised Sarawak’s commitment to supporting national efforts in hosting the Games, highlighting the importance of infrastructure, athlete development, and community engagement.
The talks also extended to broader issues of sports development, focusing on nurturing talent and improving facilities across Sarawak.
The premier noted that sports play a vital role in fostering unity and promoting healthy lifestyles, while also contributing to the state’s reputation as a hub for regional and international events.
Minister Dr Mohammad Taufiq expressed confidence in Sarawak’s ability to deliver on its responsibilities as a SEA Games cluster, citing the state’s track record in hosting major sporting events.
He also stressed the importance of cooperation between federal and state governments in ensuring the success of the Games.
Sarawak has been actively investing in sports infrastructure, with new facilities and training centres being developed to support athletes.
The state government has also prioritised youth engagement, aiming to provide opportunities for young people to participate in sports at both grassroots and competitive levels.
The courtesy visit underscored the shared vision of both federal and state leaders in advancing Malaysia’s sporting agenda.
With the SEA Games approaching, the collaboration is expected to bring long-term benefits to Sarawak, not only in sports but also in tourism and economic growth.
The Premier concluded by reaffirming Sarawak’s readiness to work closely with the Ministry of Youth and Sports, ensuring that the 2027 SEA Games will be a successful and memorable event for Malaysia and the region.
