BINTULU – The 24th National Xiang Qi Master Championship 2026 commenced on 26 April with an opening ceremony that drew elite players, coaches, and enthusiasts of Chinese chess from across Malaysia.
The event, held at Dinner World Restaurant, marked the beginning of three days of competition hosted at Li Hua Hotel Bintulu.
The ceremony was officiated by Mr Jeremy Anak Luguh, Bintulu Division Youth and Sports Officer, representing the Director of the Sarawak State Youth and Sports Department.
In his address, he reaffirmed the department’s commitment to strengthening intellectual sports and nurturing professional players capable of competing internationally.
He highlighted the dual purpose of the championship, noting that it serves not only as a competitive platform but also as a means to discover and develop emerging talent among younger generations.
“Xiang Qi is not just a game but an art of strategy that requires sharp thinking and high discipline,” he said, underlining the intellectual depth of the sport.
The tournament has attracted 32 participants, including state champions, seasoned competitors, and rising talents.
Over several rounds, they will vie for the national title, with organisers emphasising the importance of fair play and strategic excellence.
As part of the opening programme, a symbolic handover of a replica cheque for RM20,000 was conducted.
The Sports Matching Grant (GPS) was presented to the Sarawak State Xiang Qi Association by Mr Jeremy Anak Luguh, reinforcing institutional support for the growth of the sport.
Xiang Qi, often referred to as Chinese chess, is widely recognised for its emphasis on tactical skill and mental discipline.
In Malaysia, the game has steadily gained popularity, particularly among younger players who view it as both a cultural tradition and a modern intellectual pursuit.
Organisers expressed optimism that the championship would elevate the profile of Xiang Qi nationally and internationally.
They hope the event will inspire greater participation, encourage the development of new talent, and contribute to Malaysia’s reputation in the global intellectual sports arena.
The Bintulu championship is expected to showcase not only competitive excellence but also the cultural significance of Xiang Qi, reflecting its role in fostering unity and intellectual growth.
With strong institutional backing and enthusiastic participation, the tournament is set to be a highlight in Malaysia’s sporting calendar.
