The visit to a major retail complex in Kuching comes as the couple prepare to depart for the sacred journey this weekend.

Dr Wan Junaidi, who has served as Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak since January 2024, was accompanied by his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah binti Mohd Sanusi, as well as their daughters during the lunchtime shopping trip to Vivacity Megamall.

The governor’s office confirmed that the outing was to purchase essential travel items, including appropriate footwear for the pilgrimage.

Vivacity Megamall, one of the largest retail and entertainment hubs in Sarawak, features a broad array of shops and eateries and attracts visitors from across the state.

After completing their shopping, the family enjoyed a meal at a local restaurant in the mall. A spokesperson for the governor’s office said the trip afforded a brief family moment before the couple’s departure for the Holy Land.

In a statement, Dr Wan Junaidi expressed hope for a smooth journey and for his family to be blessed with good health and safety during their pilgrimage.

“We pray that all travel and hajj matters for my family are made easier, and that we will be granted health, well-being and protection throughout our stay in the Holy Land,” he said.

The governor, who is Sarawak’s ceremonial head of state, has been actively engaged in state affairs since his appointment.

Earlier this month, he emphasised the importance of enhancing law enforcement to protect public safety and security in the digital era at the opening of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly session.

Dr Wan Junaidi also used the assembly address to stress the need for efficient governance and systematic public service delivery to support the state’s development objectives.

The Hajj pilgrimage is a significant religious obligation for Muslims worldwide, and many in Sarawak participate annually following official preparation courses and support programmes.

Such preparatory events offer guidance on travel arrangements, health advice and spiritual readiness for the journey to Mecca and Medina.

Leaders in Sarawak often take part in formal farewell events for departing pilgrims, reinforcing the cultural importance of the pilgrimage and the supportive role of the state.

In early May, the governor and his wife attended a send-off ceremony for pilgrims in Sebuyau, highlighting the communal respect for those undertaking the journey.

The governor’s public presence during personal and religious preparations reflects his continued engagement with both state duties and community traditions in Sarawak.
