BATU KAWA – A major road rehabilitation project is currently underway along Jalan Ha Sha Lung in Batu Kawa, aimed at improving connectivity and easing traffic flow in the area.
The initiative, valued at RM1.1 million, covers a stretch of 4.1 kilometres and is being implemented by the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).
The project, which began on 19 May 2026, is scheduled to run for 132 days, concluding on 18 November 2026.
Work is being carried out in five phases, with July expected to be the most disruptive month for road users due to tar sealing activities across different sections.
The rehabilitation includes widening corners and junctions to enhance safety and accessibility for motorists.
Land acquisition has been identified as a significant challenge in the area, with costs exceeding RM700,000 per acre for land without road access, as recorded between September and November last year.
This makes the rehabilitation project a temporary measure while awaiting larger infrastructure developments.
Plans are already in place for the construction of the third Batu Kawa bridge, linking Kampung Segedup and Kampung Sejijak. The project, estimated at RM750 million, will be funded by the Sarawak government.
In addition, a parallel bypass along Sungai Sarawak, stretching approximately six kilometres, is projected to cost RM2.4 billion and is expected to be completed by 2030.
The second Batu Kawa bridge has already commenced and is progressing steadily, providing much-needed relief to the growing traffic demands in the region.
These projects form part of Sarawak’s broader infrastructure strategy to strengthen connectivity and support economic growth.
Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Dr Sim Kui Hian, who also serves as Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, highlighted the urgency of completing such projects quickly.
He noted that contractors are under pressure to accelerate work due to escalating material costs, largely driven by global conflicts in the Middle East.
The rising prices of construction materials, which were not factored into tender bids, have created financial challenges for contractors.
Despite these hurdles, the rehabilitation of Jalan Ha Sha Lung is seen as a vital step in maintaining road safety and ensuring smoother travel for residents.
The project underscores the government’s commitment to addressing immediate infrastructure needs while preparing for long-term solutions through larger-scale developments.
Residents in Batu Kawa have been advised to anticipate temporary inconveniences during the rehabilitation period, particularly in July, but officials assure that the improvements will bring lasting benefits to the community once completed.
