KUCHING – The Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF) 2026 will welcome Thailand’s ASIA7, a contemporary music collective known for its innovative blend of traditional Thai instruments with modern genres such as jazz and pop.
The group is scheduled for an interview session on 28 June 2026 at the Media Centre, Casuarina Hall, Damai Beach Resort, from 11:00 am to 11:30 am.
Formed by musicians from Mahidol University’s College of Music, ASIA7 has built a reputation for reinterpreting cultural heritage through modern arrangements.
Their performances often feature instruments such as the saw-duang, pin, and khaen, seamlessly integrated into contemporary soundscapes.
This approach has positioned the ensemble as part of a new generation of Southeast Asian artists redefining traditional music for global audiences.
The Rainforest World Music Festival, widely regarded as one of Asia’s premier cultural events, carries the theme “Regenerations: Roots & Rhythms” this year.
The concept highlights how traditional music continues to evolve while retaining its cultural essence. ASIA7’s artistry reflects this theme by merging heritage with experimentation, offering audiences a fresh perspective on Thai identity in a globalised era.
The group’s participation underscores the festival’s role as a platform for cultural exchange. With performers from across ASEAN and beyond, RWMF fosters dialogue between diverse traditions.
ASIA7’s presence adds to this dynamic, showcasing how Thai music shares similarities and influences with other regional cultures.
Their work illustrates the interconnectedness of Southeast Asian traditions while maintaining a distinct national character.
Festival organisers emphasise that the natural setting of Damai Beach Resort enhances the immersive experience for audiences. Surrounded by Sarawak’s rich biodiversity, the event allows visitors to engage with music in a unique environment.
For ASIA7, performing in Sarawak offers an opportunity to connect with audiences who may be hearing Thai instruments for the first time, broadening appreciation for cultural diversity.
The interview session will explore how ASIA7 approaches the fusion of genres while preserving Thai identity, their reflections on cultural renewal, and their impressions of Sarawak as a gateway to Borneo.
Questions will also touch on the role of traditional instruments in storytelling, the impact of ASEAN cultural exchange, and the legacy the group hopes to leave in shaping Southeast Asian music’s global presence.
ASIA7’s participation at RWMF 2026 reinforces the festival’s reputation as a bucket-list event for world music enthusiasts.
It celebrates both heritage and innovation, offering audiences a chance to witness how traditions adapt to contemporary contexts.
For Sarawak, hosting such performances strengthens its image as a hub of cultural diversity and artistic collaboration.
