SIBU – A fatal accident involving a motorcycle occurred along Jalan Sibu Jaya Barat in the early hours of 5 July 2026, leaving one man dead and another injured.
According to the Sibu District Police Headquarters, the incident was reported at approximately 2.25 am. Initial investigations revealed that the motorcycle, carrying both a rider and a passenger, was travelling from Sibu Jaya West towards Sibu Jaya City when it lost control and veered to the right side of the highway.
The rider sustained injuries to both arms and his left leg. He was rushed to Sibu Hospital for treatment. Tragically, the passenger was pronounced dead at the scene by medical officers from Sibu Hospital at around 2.48 am. The victim’s body has since been transferred to the hospital’s forensic unit for post-mortem examination.
Police confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987, which deals with causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. The authorities stressed that the investigation will determine the circumstances leading to the accident.
In a statement, Sibu District Police Chief ACP Abang Zainal Abidin bin Abang Ahmad reminded parents not to allow their children to ride motorcycles without a valid licence. He highlighted that riding without a licence constitutes an offence under Section 39(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. Offenders may face a fine of up to RM2,000, imprisonment for up to six months, or both.
The police reiterated their commitment to road safety enforcement, noting that compliance with traffic laws is essential to reducing accidents and protecting lives. They urged the public to exercise caution, particularly during late-night travel, and to ensure that motorcycles are operated responsibly and within legal requirements.
This latest incident underscores ongoing concerns about motorcycle safety in Sarawak. Authorities continue to advise parents and guardians to monitor their children’s activities and discourage risky behaviour on the roads. The police emphasised that community cooperation is vital in preventing further tragedies and ensuring safer highways for all road users.
