SELANGAU – The Minister of Works of Malaysia, Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, conducted an official site visit on 6 July 2026 to the Selangau–Mukah intersection, where a Reinforced Earth (RE) Wall structure has sustained damage.
The visit was organised to provide the minister with a direct view of the situation and allow him to receive detailed technical briefings from officers of the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR), contractors and project consultants.
The inspection focused on evaluating the extent of the structural damage and reviewing immediate measures taken to safeguard road users.
The minister was also briefed on traffic management strategies currently in place to minimise disruption and ensure safety while repair planning is underway.
Accompanying the minister were senior officials including Datu Adj. Prof. Ir. Ts. Gs. Br. PMr. QPr. Dr. Cassidy Anak Morris, Director of Works Sarawak, and Ir. Ts. Gs. Br. PMr. QPr. Chieng Siong Ming, Divisional Engineer of JKR Sibu Division.
Representatives from the Ministry of Works, Public Works Department Malaysia and JKR Sarawak were also present, underscoring the importance of coordinated action in addressing infrastructure challenges.
During the briefing, the minister was informed of the initial causes of the damage, the safety precautions already implemented, and the repair strategies being prepared.
He emphasised that the Ministry of Works is committed to ensuring that remedial work is carried out systematically, efficiently and in line with established technical standards. This, he stressed, is vital to guarantee both the safety and comfort of road users.
The damaged RE Wall at the Selangau–Mukah intersection has raised concerns among local communities, given the importance of the route as a key link in central Sarawak.
Reinforced Earth structures are widely used in road construction for stability and durability, but when compromised, they can pose risks to traffic flow and public safety.
The Ministry’s proactive response reflects its broader commitment to maintaining infrastructure resilience across the state.
The visit also highlighted the government’s approach to balancing immediate repair needs with long-term solutions.
By engaging contractors and consultants directly on site, the Ministry aims to ensure that corrective measures are not only effective but sustainable, reducing the likelihood of similar issues in the future.
Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi reiterated that road safety remains a top priority for the ministry. He assured that all necessary steps will be taken to restore the structure and maintain public confidence in the safety of Sarawak’s road network.
