SIBU – The Library Service Transformation Workshop Series has commenced at Hotel Tanahmas, Sibu, running from 6 to 9 July 2026. The programme is being held in conjunction with the Premier Public Library Awards Sarawak 2026 and brings together library staff from Local Authorities (PBT), Digital Community Centres (DCC), and rural libraries under the National Library of Malaysia (PNM).
The workshop opened with a welcome address by Hajah Salina binti Haji Zawawi, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (Library) of Pustaka Negeri Sarawak. In her remarks, she underscored the importance of transforming library services to adapt to technological advancements and to meet the expectations of a society that is becoming increasingly dynamic.
She highlighted that libraries must evolve beyond traditional roles, positioning themselves as hubs of digital literacy, community engagement and lifelong learning. According to her, the transformation process is essential to ensure libraries remain relevant and continue to serve as inclusive spaces for knowledge sharing.
The workshop is designed not only as a platform for discussion but also as a collaborative space where participants can exchange experiences, share best practices and explore innovative approaches. By doing so, the programme aims to strengthen the delivery of library services, making them more effective, inclusive and impactful for communities across Sarawak.
Sessions throughout the workshop will focus on strategies for integrating digital tools, enhancing accessibility, and developing programmes that respond to the needs of diverse user groups. Participants are encouraged to contribute ideas that can help shape the future of library services, ensuring they remain resilient in the face of rapid technological change.
The Premier Public Library Awards Sarawak 2026, held alongside the workshop, will recognise outstanding achievements in library service delivery. The awards aim to celebrate innovation, inclusivity and excellence, while motivating libraries across the state to continue improving their services.
The event reflects Sarawak’s broader commitment to advancing education and digital transformation. By equipping library staff with new skills and perspectives, the workshop supports the state’s vision of building stronger, more connected communities through accessible knowledge resources.
With representatives from local authorities, community centres and rural libraries in attendance, the workshop also highlights the importance of collaboration across different institutions. This collective effort is seen as vital in ensuring that library services reach all segments of society, from urban centres to remote areas.
As the workshop continues over the coming days, participants are expected to develop actionable strategies that will contribute to the long-term transformation of library services in Sarawak, reinforcing their role as essential pillars of education and community development.
