SARIKEI – A lifelong passion for durian cultivation has propelled Mr Wong Chung Sieng, 75, into becoming one of Sarikei Division’s most successful agro-entrepreneurs, with more than six decades of experience in the industry.
Mr Wong began his journey in 1961, investing his personal savings to plant 30 village durian trees across two acres of land. Today, his orchard spans 43 acres and is home to premium clones including Musang King, Duri Hitam (Black Thorn), D165, Tupai King and Telur Buaya. His dedication and systematic approach to orchard management have enabled him to produce between eight and ten tonnes of durian each season.
To achieve this, Mr Wong employs modern agricultural practices such as scheduled fertilisation, integrated pest and disease management (IPM), drainage rehabilitation and adult grafting techniques, also known as top working, which convert older trees into high-value clones. These methods have not only improved productivity but also enhanced the quality of his harvests.
The Sarawak Agriculture Department continues to support agro-entrepreneurs like Mr Wong by providing technical advisory services, technology transfer, farm monitoring and training. This guidance ensures farmers adopt good agricultural practices, boosting efficiency and competitiveness in Sarawak’s fruit industry. The department’s involvement reflects the state’s broader commitment to modernising agriculture and empowering rural communities.
Looking ahead, Mr Wong aims to increase his production to between 20 and 25 tonnes per season to meet rising demand across Sarawak. His success story demonstrates how perseverance, innovation and consistent technical support can create resilient agro-entrepreneurs, inspiring younger generations to explore opportunities in agriculture.
His achievements were recognised during an official working visit by Yang Berhormat Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Anak Utom, Minister of Food Industry, Commodities and Regional Development Sarawak. The visit was also attended by Mr Dominic Anak Chunggat, Director of Agriculture Sarawak; Mrs Radziah Binti Jack, Deputy Director of Operations Sector; Ms Jessyca Andrew Mujah, Sarikei Division Agriculture Officer; and senior officers from the Sarawak Agriculture Department.
During the visit, officials highlighted Mr Wong’s contribution to the agro-food industry, noting that his success illustrates the potential of combining traditional dedication with modern agricultural technology. “Mr Wong’s success story proves that with passion, determination and the application of modern agricultural technology and practices, the agricultural sector can become a sustainable source of income and contribute to the development of Sarawak’s agro-food industry,” said the department.
Mr Wong’s journey from a small orchard to a thriving durian enterprise underscores the transformative power of innovation in agriculture. His story serves as a model for aspiring farmers, showing that with commitment and support, Sarawak’s agricultural sector can continue to flourish and contribute to the state’s economic growth.
