The inspection was attended by representatives of Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian and Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development Sarawak alongside local officials.

The project, overseen by the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP), is a major infrastructure initiative aimed at improving connectivity in Kuching.

It involves the construction of a 5.644 kilometre dual carriageway, a 74.8 metre reinforced concrete bridge across Sungai Moyan, and a 280.8 metre reinforced concrete bridge spanning Sungai Sarawak.

Additional works include culverts, drainage systems, street lighting, and the relocation of utilities to accommodate the new road alignment.

Scheduled to run from 11 February 2026 to 10 February 2029, the project is expected to take three years to complete.

According to MPP Chairman Councillor Tan Kai, physical progress currently stands at 3.86 percent, compared to the scheduled 2.77 percent.

This places the project 1.09 per cent ahead of its planned timeline, signalling efficient management and timely execution of works.

The Batu Kawa Road project is considered vital for easing traffic congestion in Kuching, particularly in areas experiencing rapid urban growth.

By linking Batu Kawa with Stephen Yong Road, the development is expected to provide smoother access for residents and businesses, while also supporting economic activity in surrounding districts.

Local leaders have emphasised the importance of ensuring that the project not only meets technical standards but also delivers long-term benefits for communities.

Improved road infrastructure is seen as a key driver of regional development, enabling better mobility, reducing travel times, and enhancing safety for road users.

The inspection visit highlighted the government’s commitment to monitoring progress closely and ensuring accountability in public works.

With construction already ahead of schedule, stakeholders expressed optimism that the project will continue to advance steadily and meet its completion target in 2029.

The Batu Kawa Road project forms part of Sarawak’s broader infrastructure development agenda, which aims to strengthen connectivity across urban and rural areas.

By investing in modern transport networks, the state seeks to support economic growth, improve quality of life, and prepare for future demands in mobility and logistics.
