MPP Councillor Leads Crucial Cleansing Inspection at Local Market

PADAWAN – Infrastructure enhancement and environmental hygiene took centre stage this week during a comprehensive site inspection at one of the region’s busiest trading hubs. High-level representatives from the local government authority converged on the Sungai Maong Market, situated at the 3rd Mile, to conduct a rigorous assessment of local facilities, with a specific focus on the efficiency of the drainage network and the standard of public sanitation.

The initiative was spearheaded by Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) Resident Councillor, Cr. Alvin Chong, who led a delegation of municipal officers through the wet market and its adjacent commercial precincts. The primary objective of the exercise was to evaluate structural maintenance requirements and ensure that the public space complies with stringent statutory health standards, following recent concerns regarding urban upkeep in the municipality.

During the walkabout, Councillor Chong actively engaged with local business operators, market vendors, and members of the public to gather direct feedback on the daily operational challenges within the area. These grassroots discussions provided the council with vital insights into the lived experiences of the community, highlighting the precise areas where public infrastructure requires immediate municipal intervention.

The physical assessment revealed several critical maintenance shortcomings that demand urgent resolution. Notably, Councillor Chong identified numerous drainage channels blocked by debris, which pose a significant risk of localized flash flooding during heavy downpours—a recurrent issue in urban Sarawak. Furthermore, the inspection team uncovered multiple instances of illegal refuse disposal scattered behind the commercial properties, which undermines the council’s ongoing public health efforts.

In response to these findings, Councillor Chong issued immediate directives to the accompanying MPP technical team, instructing them to deploy environmental health officers and maintenance crews to resolve the issues without delay. The mandated actions include comprehensive desilting of the blocked drainage systems and the immediate clearance of unauthorized waste accumulation zones to restore hygienic conditions to the trading hub.

Urban markets like the Sungai Maong facility serve as vital socio-economic anchors for the Padawan community, making their upkeep essential for both public safety and local commerce. The council noted that blocked drains not only disrupt business operations but also create breeding grounds for disease-carrying vectors, which poses a severe risk to public health if left unaddressed.

Following the site visit, the Padawan Municipal Council issued an official appeal directed at the broader community, emphasizing that municipal efforts must be paired with civic responsibility to achieve lasting improvements. The local authority stressed that maintaining a hygienic environment requires active cooperation from all stakeholders who frequent or operate within the commercial zone.

The council has strongly urged market traders, hawkers, shoppers, and local residents to practice responsible waste management and utilize designated refuse disposal facilities. Municipal representatives emphasized that the eradication of illegal dumping is a shared obligation, requiring a collective shift in public behavior to safeguard the environment.

Moving forward, the MPP plans to increase the frequency of monitoring exercises across its jurisdiction to ensure that traders strictly adhere to waste disposal regulations. Educational campaigns and enforcement measures may be scaled up in the coming months to deter individuals from engaging in practices that compromise the cleanliness of shared public spaces.

The local government reiterated its long-term vision of transforming Padawan into a clean, safe, and ecologically sustainable district. By tackling infrastructure vulnerabilities and fostering civic pride, the council aims to enhance the quality of life for all residents while establishing a resilient urban framework capable of supporting future growth.
