The event, staged at the Batang Lupar Bridge 1, was marked by enthusiasm and international participation, positioning the marathon as a potential fixture in Sarawak’s sports tourism calendar.

Deputy Minister of Infrastructure Development Sarawak, YB Datuk Aidel Lariwo, attended the ceremony on behalf of Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.

He officiated the flag-off for the 10 kilometre and 5 kilometre categories, while the Sarawak Director of Public Works, YBhg. Datu Adj. Prof. Ir. Ts. Gs. Br. PMr. QPr. Dr. Cassidy Anak Morris, launched the 21 kilometre category.

The marathon featured three race categories: 596 runners competed in the 21KM half marathon, 776 runners joined the 10KM race, and 1,628 runners participated in the 5KM run.

International athletes, including participants from Kenya, added prestige to the event, underscoring its potential to grow into an international-class competition.

The Batang Lupar Bridge 1, recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records as the country’s longest river-crossing bridge, provided a striking backdrop for the race.

Participants experienced the rare opportunity of running across one of Sarawak’s most iconic engineering achievements, combining sport with a showcase of infrastructure development.

Organisers highlighted that the marathon was not only about promoting fitness but also about introducing Sarawak’s infrastructure achievements to both residents and visitors.

The event demonstrated how strategic projects can serve multiple purposes, from improving connectivity to acting as catalysts for tourism and socio-economic growth.

The Sarawak Government and the Public Works Department emphasised that the marathon reflects their commitment to utilising infrastructure as a platform for community engagement.

By hosting events at landmark sites, they aim to strengthen sports tourism, stimulate local economies, and promote Sarawak as a destination capable of hosting international gatherings.

Sports tourism has been identified as a growing sector in Sarawak, with events like the Batang Lupar Bridge Half Marathon offering opportunities to attract visitors, generate revenue, and foster community pride.

The inclusion of international runners further enhances the state’s profile as a competitive destination for global sporting events.

Local businesses in Sebuyau also benefited from the influx of participants and spectators, with hotels, eateries, and vendors reporting increased activity.

The marathon thus served as a reminder of how sporting events can contribute to broader economic development while reinforcing Sarawak’s sustainable growth agenda.

Officials noted that the success of the inaugural marathon sets the stage for future editions, with expectations that it will continue to grow in scale and reputation.

The event demonstrated how infrastructure projects can be leveraged beyond their primary function, becoming focal points for cultural, social, and sporting activities.

The Batang Lupar Bridge 1 Half Marathon 2026 concluded with strong community support and positive feedback from participants, many of whom praised the organisation and the unique experience of running across Malaysia’s longest river-crossing bridge.

The event is now seen as a milestone in Sarawak’s efforts to integrate infrastructure, tourism, and sports into a cohesive development strategy.
