KUCHING – Sarawak is steadfast in its goal to launch a nanosatellite by 2030, reinforcing the state’s ambitions to advance scientific research, enhance digital capabilities, and support a data-driven economy.
At the opening of the Sarawak Science Centre in Petra Jaya on 29 July 2026, Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Haji Abdul Rahman Zohari bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg outlined the state’s plan to deploy a CubeSat, a type of nanosatellite, into low Earth orbit.
This satellite will gather critical data to aid environmental monitoring, research, and sustainable resource management.
“Our target for 2030 is to launch our nanosatellite into low Earth orbit. Once we have the satellite, it will be able to capture data on Earth, and that data will help us conduct research on what Sarawak has,” said Abang Johari.
The Premier stressed the growing importance of data, referring to it as “the new oil” that will fuel future economic growth. He highlighted that satellite data can help scientists identify key resources, monitor forest conditions, and drive innovation across multiple sectors.
“If we have the data, we can move forward with research. We can better understand the resources beneath our land and develop new products that create value for the economy,” Abang Johari added.
This nanosatellite project complements Sarawak’s wider commitment to developing its science and technology landscape, including investments in artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and digital infrastructure.
While AI is expected to accelerate innovation, the Premier emphasised that human creativity and intelligence remain vital in generating new knowledge and discovering solutions.
“Artificial intelligence is based on programming, but human intelligence is still needed to create new knowledge and discover solutions that can benefit mankind,” he remarked.
In addition, Abang Johari encouraged international scientists and researchers to engage with the Sarawak Science Centre, which he described as a hub for global scientific cooperation.
He pointed out that Borneo’s equatorial location, coupled with its rich biodiversity, renewable energy potential, and natural resources, offers exceptional opportunities for technological advancement and research.
“The Science Centre is not only for Sarawak or Malaysia. It is meant to be a platform for international collaboration as we work together to build solutions for the future of humanity,” he said.
The state’s focus on space technology and digital innovation reflects a strategic effort to diversify its economy and position Sarawak as a leader in the knowledge-based economy of the future.
The nanosatellite initiative not only aims to provide valuable insights for environmental stewardship but also to create new economic opportunities through technology-driven enterprises.
