MIRI – Sarawak may be on the cusp of another energy breakthrough, as early indications of reserves have been detected in the Adung area of Miri, according to Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg.

Speaking during a press conference following the Marina Bridge Groundbreaking Ceremony held at a prominent hotel in Miri on Tuesday, the Premier revealed that exploration activities are actively ongoing and have shown promising signs of underground reserves.

“For now, there are indeed exploration works being carried out in the Adung area, and there are hints that there are reserves,” he said. “However, I can’t reveal any more details. If others know, it might affect the process. We want to do our own research first. If the feasibility is there, then we will proceed.”

While remaining cautious, Abang Johari emphasised that no official conclusion has been drawn on whether the reserve is commercially viable for development. The exploration team is still in the early phase of feasibility studies, and results will determine the next course of action.

In his earlier speech at the ceremony, the Premier mentioned that the exploration process will incorporate new technologies, aiming to modernise resource identification and extraction methods.

He also noted that any successful discovery and eventual production would contribute significantly to Sarawak’s income while supporting the state’s long-term Sarawak Gas Roadmap (SGR), a key policy initiative by the Sarawak Government to strengthen its energy independence and economic resilience.

This development aligns with Sarawak’s broader ambitions to become a major energy player in the region, tapping into local resources to fuel sustainable growth and self-sufficiency.
